Consumer Directed Services (CDS)

Already caring for your loved one? You may be able to get paid for it.

Missouri’s Consumer Directed Services program lets an eligible Medicaid participant choose the person they trust most, like a daughter, son, grandchild, niece, or friend, as their paid caregiver.

How CDS Works

Consumer Directed Services is a Missouri Medicaid (MO HealthNet) program overseen by the Department of Health and Senior Services. Instead of being assigned a caregiver by an agency, the person receiving care chooses their own attendant. That attendant is paid through Medicaid, at no cost to the family, and Bella serves as the agency that handles the administrative side.

Who Can Be the Paid Caregiver

The caregiver can be an adult child, grandchild, other relative, neighbor, or friend. Under program rules, a spouse and a parent of a minor child cannot be the paid attendant. No special certification is required. The caregiver must pass a background screening through Missouri’s Family Care Safety Registry.

What the Caregiver Helps With

  • Bathing, dressing, and personal hygiene
  • Meal preparation
  • Light housekeeping and laundry
  • Medication reminders
  • Mobility and getting around the home

What Bella Handles for You

  • Enrollment paperwork and program guidance
  • Caregiver payroll and timesheets
  • Payroll taxes and compliance
  • Ongoing support from our office team

Many families have been doing this work for years without pay. CDS is a way to recognize that love and keep a trusted face in the home.

FAQ

Questions Families Ask Us

Can I get paid to care for my mom or dad in Missouri?

Often, yes. If your parent has Missouri Medicaid and meets functional eligibility, they can choose you as their paid attendant through Consumer Directed Services.

Who can't be a paid CDS caregiver?

Under Missouri program rules, a spouse and the parent of a minor child cannot serve as the paid attendant. Adult children, grandchildren, other relatives, and friends generally can.

Do I need to be a CNA or have a certification?

No special certification is required. You will need to pass a background screening through the Family Care Safety Registry.

How does the caregiver get paid?

Pay comes through Missouri Medicaid with no cost to the person receiving care. Bella manages payroll, taxes, and compliance so you get paid correctly and on time.

What's the difference between CDS and regular in-home care?

With regular in-home care, the agency provides a professional caregiver. With CDS, your loved one chooses their own caregiver, often a family member. Both are Medicaid-funded.
